2012 Thunderwolf District Spring Camporee
This year's District Camporee is designed for all Scouts to enjoy a friendly outdoor challenge. Patrols will compete in fun and skill oriented events. Prior to coming to Camporee, Patrols should put together a plan to be successful in all events using each member’s skills. Saturday morning Patrols will visit each of the competition areas to observe demonstrations and take notes on the details of each event. During the competition each Patrol must visit all areas. Each skill event will have a maximum point value of 40 and a minimum point total of 0 for those who are unable finish in the time allowed. There will also be 8 points given to Patrols who visit each of morning demonstrations. The maximum total points available are 328. The ideal Patrol size is 5 to 8 Scouts. If you have a Patrol larger than 10 please make them into two Patrols. You may name them Patrol A and B. If you have two small Patrols you may combine them into one. The purpose of this is so that each boy will have an opportunity to participate. We would discourage Troops from making a group of older Scouts (16 and 17 year olds). Let your older Scouts mentor the younger boys or serve on staff. Use the event challenges to plan your upcoming Troop meetings and practice their skills. A full Camporee weekend schedule, detailed program plan and a list of things to bring will be available by March 1st.
The new feature this year is that each event will be run by scouts, with adult supervision of course. We will need two adults at each event for two-deep leadership, but we will also need to have at least two scouts at each event to check in the patrols and to monitor their competition.
There are two overriding observations that I need to adults to make. One is we will be recommending a patrol for a special Camporee award. This patrol will be one that demonstrates scout spirit. They will be cooperative, encouraging to each other, and they will be encouraging to the other patrols in the competition. That doesn’t mean that if they do any good humored kidding, in good fun, that they are ineligible. It does mean that their overall attitude toward all of the other participants is one that reflects the scout oath, promise and the principles of scouting.
In addition to the following events listed, there will be another one that is a Geocaching exercise. When the patrols are given their event schedule in the afternoon, they will only be given a set of GPS coordinates and a GPS. Each time they leave a station an adult from that station will write down the time they left. When they check in to the next one, an adult will write down the time they arrive. The team with the best time getting from event to event, by using the GPS coordinates, will receive a special camp prize.
1- Pioneering (Scout Skill) - (troop- Patrol will put together an A frame using two different lashings. Scouts will then need to pull one Scout around a short course. The predetermined course will have five poles on it with rings that the rider on the A frame will have to capture with a lance while riding through the course. The patrol must also disassemble the A frame. So just putting the lightest scout on the A frame may or may not be the beset idea. This is a timed event, plus points for the number of rings captured with the lance. 2- Archery (Field Sport) (still tentative) (Troop- Patrol will be given 10 arrows to shoot at a target at 15 yards. Each Scout must at least shoot one arrow. Points will be given for arrows in the target area.
3- Roman Legion (Team Building) (Troop- Patrol must walk in unison using 2 Eight Foot 2X4s with ropes attached. All Scouts must stay on together, in lock step. They must walk the length of the course, turn around and walk back. If a Scout falls they must all start at the beginning. This is a timed event.
4- Fishing (Outdoor Knowledge and Skill) (Troop- Patrol will be given time before events begin to study a poster of fish. At the challenge Scouts will need to identify 10 different fish from memory. This event will also have a casting challenge. 4 different Scouts will need to cast a weight into a small target area. Points are determined by the number of fish cited from memory and accuracy of the casting challenge.
5- Obstacle Course (Physical Fitness) (Troop-1316) Patrol will need to stay together as a team until they reach the finish line. Course will contain 5 obstacles and be over 1/4 mile long. This is a timed event.
6- First Aid (Preparedness) (Troop-1316) Patrol will need to correctly bandage one Scout using a forearm splint and sling. Scouts will then make and carry one Scout on a stretcher using Poles and a blanket. This is a timed event.
7- Orienteering (Scout Skill) (Troop- Patrol will need to determine a location using three coordinates. Scouts will only use a compass and their stride. Points will be determined by the distance closest to the final location.
8- Water Boiling (Fire Building) (Troop -1316) Patrol will be given 3 matches, and two segments of 2X4 and a hatchet. They will need to bring a can of water to a boil. Points will be determined by time
There has been a change to our reservation at Bovay Scout Ranch the weekend of our Spring Camporee, March 23-25. The Council has moved us from Road A to the primitive Camporee sites due to an overwhelming response to their Cub Scout Event the same weekend. We will adjust and support the Council in this decision.
We will have plenty of room for camping and program. I have talked to our Camporee Chair Bill Petticrew and OA Chapter Advisor Susan Fredericksen about these changes and they feel good about providing a quality weekend for all units. Our District Executive George Etier and I will make sure Troops will have the best possible facilities with access to water and portable toilets so that all Scouts and Leaders will be comfortable during this special District Event.
With these changes Units may need to be prepared to be in a slightly more primitive area and will need to bring their own tables, tarps and chairs. I am hopeful this change will be respected and that all will keep a positive attitude as we prepare for this important Scout weekend. If you have any questions please feel free to call me. ** 3/19/12 - The Leader guide has been updated.
