For those considering Camp Alexander as a base camp for younger scouts, you should also consider nearby (Buena Vista) Rocky Mountain Scout Camp. They have a relatively small base, but conduct custom high adventure weeks for participants. Crews have options of backpacking, white water rafting (many class II and plenty of class III rapids on the Arkansas River), climbing, and moutain biking, all supervised by experienced and certified guides. You can mix and match activities to suit your taste. For the backpackers, there is a choice of four 14,000 peaks you can climb in the collegiate range. If you can't go to Philmont, and you like the altitude, this is a great way to go. My troop went in 2009 when we split our younger scouts out to go to Alexander. We had a great time.
