On January 28, 2012, The Thunder Wolf District of the Sam Houston Area Council of Boy Scouts of America held its 2012 District Dinner. A number of awards were presented.
Vince Donart, Thunder Wolf District Chairman, announced that the District had achieved Silver Level in Scouting’s “Journey to Excellence.” Vince expressed his appreciation to David Van Kleeck, immediate past Chairman of the District, and to Scouts and Scouters of the District for their hard work to achieve this level. Vince also presented two plaques to David, from the District and from the Sam Houston Area Council, expressing appreciation for his three years’ service as District Chairman.
David Van Kleeck reviewed the events of 2011, including the achievement of the Journey to Excellence recognition. Carey Snyder made a short presentation in remembrance of Scout leaders lost during the year – Will Gawlik, Pat Moore, and Pat Thornton. After the investiture of officers (Vince Donart, Chairman, Kim Icenhower, Vice Chairman, Tim Richard, District Commissioner) by the new District Executive, George Etier, Susan Frederickson presented an update on the Order of the Arrow Chapter activities.
Unit Awards of Excellence were presented to Cub Scout Pack 828, Boy Scout Troops 659, 441, 731, 1631, 1845, and Venturing Crew 1316.
Thunder Wolf Awards were presented to Roger Hoover (Troop 103), Len Kutz ( Troop 441), Don Rakoski and Sarah Ryan ( Troop 731) , Doug Acker (Troop 1631), Andy Friedman ( Troop 1852), Steffany Leach , and Robert Goodspeed ( Troop 441).
District Awards of Merit were presented to David Rudzinski (Troop 1852) and Veniece Griffin.
The Chartered Partner of the Year Award was presented to The Exchange Club of Sugar Land, which charters both Pack 1133 and Troop 731. In addition to supporting scouting, The Exchange Club supports a number of non-profit organizations in the Fort Bend area which provide service to seniors, awareness and prevention of child abuse, service to children and families at risk, Americanism, and school shoes and Christmas presents for underprivileged youth.
The District Family of the Year Award was presented to The Frazier Family. Denise Frazier is a Committee Member of both Boy Scout Troop 731 and Venturing Crew 1003. She is also an Associate Advisor to the Crew. Her daughter, Julianne Marie, attended graduated from Elkins High School, where she was in the band and a member of FFA (President during her senior year), and is currently a student at Sam Houston State University. She was Crew President 2006-2007, Treasurer 2007-2008, and Secretary 2009-2009, and is still a member of the Crew. Denise’s son Zachary Thomas is a member of Troop 731 and Crew 1003, and a member of Tamia Tala Chapter of the Order of the Arrow. He is a Life Scout, working on his Eagle project for Lantern Lane Elementary. He attends Elkins High School, where he plays baseball.
Currently there are almost 1900 Tiger Scouts, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Crew members served by the district, supported by over 1000 adult Scouters, all volunteers
Thunder Wolf District, comprised of Stafford MISD and the portion of Fort Bend ISD South of US-59, is affiliated with the Sam Houston Area Council (Houston, Texas), the largest Boy Scout Council in the United States.
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
